Their work engages various contemporary issues dealing with sustainability and ecology using custom built software that forms an innovative approach to activism and new media technologies. We believe that their work walks a critical line between medium specific practices and contemporary issues in art and culture. A collaboration between our schools to bring Eco Art Tech to Alfred would be a fantastic experience for our students as well as the students in the Divisions of Expanded Media, Foundations, Art History and perhaps others as well. In my brief conversation with Cary and Leila, they expressed an interest in giving a presentation of their work, potentially giving graduate student studio visits and perhaps holding a workshop using their “indeterminate hike” project, found here: http://ecoarttech.org/projects/indeterminate-hike

Leila and Cary’s research has been awarded a New York Foundation for the Arts Digital/Electronic Arts Fellowship, a New York State Council on the Arts Media Arts Distribution Grant, a Mellon Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Environmental Humanities, and a Franklin Furnace Performance Grant. They have exhibited and lectured at the Whitney Museum, UCLA, MIT Media Lab, Banff New Media Institute, European Media Art Festival, Neuberger Museum of Art, and the Centro de Arte Contemporáneo de Málaga. Their works are in the collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Walker Art Center, Rhizome.org at the New Museum for Contemporary Art, Turbulence.org of New Radio & Performing Arts, Inc., and the Cornell University Rose Goldsen Archive of New Media Art. Leila earned her PhD in literature from Columbia University and was Mellon Post-Doctoral Fellow at Wellesley College in 2010-2011. Cary is Assistant Professor of Digital Art at University of Rochester, where Leila teaches humanities courses in the sustainability studies program.
In two weeks, James Voorhies will be sharing his work with us at STUDIO Visits! He is an American curator, art historian and educator, currently based in Berlin. He holds a Ph.D. in modern and contemporary art history and is founder of Bureau for Open Culture, an itinerant curatorial and artistic initiative that utilizes exhibition, education, design, communication and publishing to position the art institution as an overall form of critical practice. Check out his websiter here: http://bureauforopenculture.org/

Voorhies and Bureau for Open Culture have worked with institutions such as MASS MoCA, Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts, Wexner Center for the Arts, Printed Matter, Bennington College, Columbus College of Art & Design, the Siena Art Institute, and Salon für Kunstbuch 21er Haus in Vienna. He has produced commissioned projects with a number of artists including Claire Fontaine, Thomas Hirschhorn, Learning Site, Mary Lum, Dennis McNulty, Red76, REINIGUNGSGESELLSCHAFT and Christian Tomaszewski.

Voorhies is visiting faculty at Bennington College in Vermont and has taught art history and critical theory at San Francisco Art Institute and Parsons The New School for Design. He has served as Director of Exhibitions at Columbus College of Art & Design, Deputy Director at the Wattis Institute, and worked in curatorial departments at Brooklyn Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

He is currently working on a book titled Falling from the Grip of Grace: The Exhibition as a Critical Form since 1968, which is a historical and theoretical account of exhibitions from 1968 to the present moment with particular attention to changing roles of the spectator. It analyzes connections between late-Modernist artistic strategies engaged with the exhibition as a critical form to subsequent dispersal of those strategies into contemporary curatorial, artistic and institutional practices.

Join us on Wednesday evening around 9pm in Holmes, Harder Hall to hear Lou give his Marriage Manifesto. Here’s what he says about it:

What is it?

Observations and reflections on the nature of love and relationships developed primarily, but not exclusively, for students in their twenties.

“I am an artist–– not a psychologist, the Manifesto is as much a performance as it is anything else. My ideas are sometimes irreverent, possibly wrong-headed, but should keep you engaged long enough to realize that few of us know crap about love. We just like to think we do.”

History

Seven years ago a handful of our graduating seniors (Bowling Green State University) asked me to grab a beer and share my thoughts on love and marriage with them. After a pretty crazy evening I went home that night and began the Marriage Manifesto. What started as a two-page, tongue-in-cheek document has grown each year to an ever-expanding and more thoughtful fifteen-page manuscript, and fifty-five minute presentation.

I have read the Manifesto on the steps of the Duomo in Florence, Italy several times at Bowling Green State University, and twice at Indiana University. It’s been suggested many times that I publish it or put it online but I think it works best in person with a live audience (as opposed to a dead one).

If you are easily offended this is probably not the talk for you. This presentation is rated R for language, and UI for the occasional unseemly image.

Lou Krueger

As an artist my primary goal has always been to create magic with my artwork and to serve as an intermediary between the physical world, the world 0f existential illusion and everyday life. For thirty years my work has examined the edges of alternative photographic approaches. From my earliest clichés-verre to my pinhole photographs to my more recent combinations of 2D and 3D installation, I have developed image and object-making systems that exploit photographic space, perception and reinforce the ambiguous character of my narratives.

I am a writer of fiction, and my stories— my photographs, dioramas, and installations— reflect the idea that frequently there is a better description of truth in fiction than you can find in documents of the phenomenal world: The Mouth as Signifier of Status and Host for Pleasure and Pain. Animal Investigations in the Name of Science. Lack of Love on Foreign Soil. Big Jars of Teeth Launch Careers. Alleged Infidelity of Parents and What To Do About It. The narratives themselves represent fantasy masquerading as reality and emphasize an absurd world filled with the contradictory and inexplicable messages that bombard us daily. In this manner my work tends to function more like the irregular spray of a shotgun shell rather than a well-placed bullet. It moves in the general direction of my aim, scatters in the name of expression, and occasionally, if I’m lucky, hits something.

After a couple of decades of making art I finally have something to say….
